Every nation for itself, I heard the pundit say, I said what's a pundit, in my head, I breathe, I think, I said, dunno. Well, do tell, I asked myself, learn for us all what a pundit is. Oh, see it is an Empire classifier 1670s, "learnëd Hindu," especially one versed in Sanskrit lore, science, law, or religion, in the eyes of a merchant from the backward west, as any pundit might quietly discern… from Hindi payndit "a learnëd man, master, teacher," from Sanskrit payndita-s "a learnëd man, scholar," a word of uncertain origin. -- so many such we have Broader application in English to "any learnëd man" is recorded by 1816.
