#exoplanets
Let me daydream in this cosmic abyss, and lose myself in its magic and bliss. For in the space between stars and dreams, anything is possible, vivid as it seems. I dream of planets with oceans of gold and moons with mountains that are extremely cold; of nebulas that paint the sky in hues, and black holes that swallow entire views. Beneath the stars, a deep vast ocean lies, teeming with life that I can only surmise. On a distant planet, so far from our own, an ocean of mystery lies unknown, with waves that crash upon alien shores, and secrets that hide beneath the ocean floor. I sit and gaze into the endless expanse, and let my mind take an astral chance; to travel to worlds beyond our own, where the mysteries of space have yet to be known.

Stardust
On the eve of twenty-twenty-two We are ready to celebrate Another New Year. But throughout The Milky Way, Eighty five percent of stars are red dwarves Which nestle worlds that are tidally locked. Such planets have no days or seasons Nothing to show the passage of Time. Half of each world faces its sun, And the other half remains in eternal night. For anyone on the ground The sun never moves across the sky. It stays perfectly still. Always midday, twilight or whatever. Here there is no New Year. Or Christmas Or Winter or Summer Solstice Or Seasons. Not even a single Day. Imagine living like that. Time happens But the measurement of Time Is manufactured By Mankind. Let’s not forget that As we celebrate And as we navigate Our Days throughout The Year. Paul Butters © PB 31\12\2021.

Timeless World
This little world is like most worlds Throughout the Cosmos. Here the sun never moves From its place in the sky: Seemingly endless morning or eve, Take your choice. No concept of time. No seasons. Nothing to show the passing of the years. Just that sun. Moons optional. The plants are black Under a dark red sky All sombre All still Apart from the odd cold wind From this planet’s “Dark Side”. For, like most planets, This world resides in the Goldilocks Zone Of a Red Dwarf Star A zone where water may flow Under the glow of a star Like the vast majority of stars Throughout the universe. This world’s residents might well look out Into space With envy at our golden sun With its blue Earth Adorned with a coat of green And its seasons And days and nights. They may learn from us about time About our freedom to roam a long way Without meeting tropical desert And eternal frost on the dark side. They may gasp in wonder At this Paradise of ours As they ponder their black grass And hide from solar flares. No respite from that relentless red sun, No sense of time Apart from monotony. And they might wonder at us, As we fail to care For our glorious world As it basks in our golden sun. Paul Butters © PB 28\7\2001.

Common World
According to the Bible there is “Heaven” A high place where all good people go When their Life’s innings is over. But Bad folk go down to “Hell” – To suffer “bottomless perdition”. Yet we only have to look up At the morning or evening sky To see Planet Hell: It’s the brightest “star” of all: Venus! And I believe That out there amongst that ocean of stars There is a so called “Exoplanet” In a distant solar system Like ours Perhaps twice as big as Earth: A sub-tropical world With ice only at the very poles And on lofty mountain tops. I see a place of endless forest Filled with butterflies And songbirds. Grassy plains too, Roamed by alien buffalo. Oceans teeming with fish And dolphins And colourful corals. A world untroubled By killing Or pollution. Dotted with tiny villages Only With peaceful inhabitants Basking in afternoon suns. I picture a utopian paradise Shangri-la Or what you will. Another Eden, Or if you prefer Simply Heaven. Paul Butters © PB 28\12\2020. Another one for Norman Stevens.

Heaven
This thing we call the universe reaches out Beyond the beyond. The sweeping sky seduces our senses With shimmering stars. A mere glimpse At endless heavens. Swirling galaxy clusters, Travelling beyond the speed of light. Like grains of sand on a surf-kissed beach, These star-packed galaxies fly forth. Meanwhile, at sub-atomic level, Exotic particles wink in and out of existence. Most stars are red dwarves. Many harbouring exoplanets In their Goldilocks Zones. One-eyed worlds with the same side Always facing the sun. On such a world there’s no such thing As a day. It’s always the same time If you stay the same place. Hot day one side, Frozen night on the other. A bright side with black plants Under a rose tinged white sky. But there are plenty of golden stars Just like our sun. Stars surrounded by rocky earths like ours. Is our Earth unique? Does it take a planetary collision To form an Earth and Moon Supporting life? Time may tell. And if we’re lucky, We might just live to see it. Did God create this Universe of ours Or is it all by chance? Who knows? Who cares? Just enjoy. Paul Butters
