#decorating
White walls glow with flickering
rainbow lights,
pine candles lit around the room.
A caffeinated mug of peppermint
in my palms
while I sit and admire the view.
Two numbered blocks for the countdown,
a little green man on the ceiling.
Spending the day putting
decorations around,
using the night to savor this feeling.
A mismatch of memories and
brand-new things,
hand-me-downs tangled with
dollar-store finds.
Old traditions stitched beside new ones,
a riddle only I can transcribe.
And in the hush after
everything’s finished,
when I’m the only one not in bed,
I feel the quiet I used to watch my parents have–
that grown-up pause,
a pure moment without dread.
It’s strange, having a Christmas that’s
just mine.
No siblings running down hallways,
no present-searching in the dark,
no sneaking extra cookies, no Christmas-magic spark.
Just me,
and the glow,
and the echo of every December
I’ve ever loved
settling gently across the room
like falling snow.

Let me show you the latest trends.
White, white and white.
White is the beginning, and the end.
We’ll mix it up with ecru,
eggshell, ivory,
some cream, or light beige,
perhaps a grey on pearl tapestry.
Color’s so last decade,
and black so last year.
White is what’s now and what’s here.
I know some good painters–
the price won’t be too dear.
Throw out your carpeting,
and your upholstery.
I’ll set you up with my people–
of course it’s not free.
Your artwork must go.
Just throw it all out
or donate to Goodwill.
And your Black Lab as well.
Get two white Toy Poodles;
everyone will know you’ve got oodles
of money. Because you’re hip to the latest trends.
And we’re sure it will impress your friends.

Evergreen trees & cranberries
Pine cones soaked in cinnamon oil
Candle holders for the beautiful Christmas candles.
Time to decorate with all the fresh trimmings.
Now where are the push pins and tacks?
They say there are only two reasons to forget:
1) I am in love, or it is 2) Senility.
I pray it is Love!

Painting
Some things of which you should all be aware,
Should you decide to paint the hall corridor and stairs,
Once you paint that first stroke that's it you can't stop,
And it's a very long... Long long way to the top,
If you choose a colour that's lighter than before
Then expect to do not one coat not two or three... But four!!
When using a roller don't go over what you've done,
It will pull it all right back off and you'll be back to square one!
when the walls are evenly covered and you think it really is done,
Remember that the glossing is even more fun,
Never believe what it says on the tin,
It will drip... It won't dry...and One one coat is too thin!!
And at last when your finished... That's when you'll see,
That there's some touching up to do where someone spilt their tea!!!

Drip, drip dripping
Down my window
Pain
Tweet, tweet tweeting
Open up windows
Again
Tug, tug tugging
The blind cord
Strain
Throb, throb throbbing
My sump pump
Drain
Drip, drip dripping
Down my window
Pain.
