Number three runner
rounded the final turn -
heart pounding in sync
with his pain-racked legs.
Reaching his mark, he surrendered
the baton to his waiting team-mate's grasp
then collapsed full-spent to his knees.
Still panting, he toweled his face -
glancing up to watch his friend
sweep first past the finish line.
Gathered for a hasty camera snap,
the team locked arms in a victory clasp
that only a bonded quartet could share.

I manage, you manage, we
manage preferably for ourselves
We do like attention
but I am not in the mood when
things are not going well for me
although I would like to support
a friend when things are
not going well for her
It is complicated
to be happy
and to change
to be happy
or not to change
but to think differently
about how I am
doing and managing and whether
we can do that together
more often

Welcome to the ongoing human project,
to be more than sentient objects
in a world perceived as dangerous;
survival depends on life’s attempts.
Restoration starts with individuals
repairing fractures within division;
through the power of the mind’s insight,
our own shadows are claimed by the light.
Activity bears the fruits of growth,
the stagnant bent to life’s control;
physicality mixed with the intellectual,
each moving beyond what’s conceptual.
The single soul works with the all,
thoughtfully deciding to leave the thralls;
a world can change by their intention,
commitments leading to our intervention.
Life’s evolution asks for a struggle,
combined with suffering in life’s puzzles;
ascension throwing off the manacles
of rote membership as merely animals.

I am alive.
My mother and father are alive.
They created me.
They helped me.
They keep helping me.
And I help them.
We are a chain.
If any part of the chain breaks
the chain falls apart.
In a soccer team, every player
does something.
In a research group, every researcher
does something.
And if my father, mother or me
didn't exist—
if a goalkeeper, defender or forward
didn't do anything—
if one researcher, only one researcher
didn't do an experiment—
the chain would break.
If a part in a group doesn't exist,
or doesn't help the group,
then there is no group.

What, somewhere, a colleague
needs in order not to get stuck
in dilemmas
asked or noticed
by another, the big heart
that nourishes us
in the symbiosis of man and earth
the cooperation of companies
in the world, arranges -
our Ubuntu, focused
on our survival and a good
life for our grandchildren
without piracy and colonialism -
the big heart that is assisted

Life is good
in Brussels and Amsterdam
People do their work
without headlines and footnotes
without indolence and excuses
in advance
Work and rules change
but everyone knows for themselves
what it takes, being of service
and satisfied, every time
the customers are kings for a while
and both are human with each other

Six-shooters are holstered, swords are scabbard, arrows are un-nocked, blades are sheathed.
Not in the course
Of one petty conflict,
But comparatively throughout history.
There is more intergovernmental cooperation,
More trade and tourism,
More declarations and treaties.
The common person
Has greater breadth of movement
In travel of classes & region.
The ignition of all these dormant conflicts
Will not lead to any new or better resolution
But, more likely than not,
More conflagration & revolution.
To win or to lose
In a game of confusion
With the strategy of lies & ambiguity.
Better than to limply concede
And forfeit all claim to belief
In what you fought to seat.
And in fifty years from now
Some blasted fool shall say:
The ignition of all these dormant conflicts
Will not lead to any new or better resolution
But, more likely than not,
More conflagration & revolution.

I don’t understand the way
That hatred seems to rule
Every minute of every day
It seems to gain more fuel
Dave told us years ago
That “We Just Disagree
But now we choose to hate and so
No answers will there be
Cooperation is a lost art
Collaboration can’t be found
Real solutions will never start
When hatred still abounds.
There was a time not long ago
When opposite sides could talk
Design and ideas would flow
Our leaders walked the walk
That time is gone, it seems for good
And hatred rules the day
Discussions turn to attacks so rude
There’s nothing left to say
It seems that now we never find
When two on opposite sides
Disagree, but still are kind
To others far and wide.
“Agree to disagree” I’ve heard the phrase
And try to comprehend
That differences, like a smoky haze
Don’t make you hate your friend.
So take a chance, just try and see
You’ll help this world go round
Don’t hate because you disagree
And answers will be found.

When I was a youth
I thought I was right
and everyone else was wrong;
Now that I’m wiser
I give respect to each person’s
unique perspective
and allow them the freedom
to be who they are;
the question for me is
how do I cooperate
with a unique other
to facilitate each other’s
joy and happiness?

In an ideal
joy-and-happiness-society
would every person in the world
be joyful and happy?
If so,
in an ideal
joy-and-happiness-society
would every person in the world
have to cooperate with everyone else
to facilitate the joy and happiness
of every person in the world?
If so,
would a world-government
be useful
to organise
cooperation
between every person in the world
to facilitate the joy and happiness
of every person in the world?

The so-called philosopher
Friedrich Nietzche writes:
"Wherever I found a living thing,
there found I Will to Power ...
to the stronger the weaker shall serve".
In an ideal
joy-and-happiness-society
would every person
be compassionate and cooperative
to every other person
instead of domineering and exploitative?
To achieve joy and happiness
in society
must we be
not domineering and exploitative
but compassionate and cooperative?

Does each of us
see the universe
from our own perspective?
If so,
does each of us
live in our own perspective-universe?
If so,
is objectivity impossible
and only subjectivity happening?
If so,
to achieve a cooperative society
does each of us
have to empathise
with each other's
unique perspective-universe?

Is each of us unique?
And yet,
are we all the same
as deep down
we are all
striving for joy and happiness?
Therefore, can we
cooperate
to facilitate each others'
joy and happiness?

It’s like watching a flower bloom from a bud
or a seed pushing through the soil
moving onward and upward
slowly but surely
toward the sky
to eventually arise
in its fresh green glory
into the light
right before our eyes.
They are taking that old house
into their hands and hearts
removing dust and accumulations
of two full and splendid lives
molding from the clay of the past
moving through the soil of a present
full of challenge and struggle
into a new, alive
unpredictable
future
together.
This new growth
fashioned from precious artifacts
and art of these two mature siblings
is not a shell which is a house
but a new flowering
which is a home.
What a delight to observe from afar
this new creation
taking shape
knowing
that their roots and ours
are emmeshed
and inseparable.
Watching these two
bright, precocious ones
so precious, priceless and cherished by us
is as delicious
and delightful
as sharing a meal
prepared in the ovens,
homes and hearts
of our mothers.
In this dynamic present
we are grateful
for parents who taught us what it means
to make and keep a home
to love and be loved by the children
of generations.
All these children
are present in the creators
and observers
of this new home
taking shape
being painting
into a landscape
that will one day
sparkle
with joy.

Eight billion people,
call this planet home.
Eight billion people,
all of them alone.
Arbitrary borders,
divide and define.
Who belongs where,
who's on which side.
Propaganda and lies,
hatred and fear,
accompany those borders.
"You're not 'From Here'".
They shout and they rant,
"Protect us from harm!
Protect us from monsters!
who work on our farms..."
Save us from humans!
That are really just the same,
but they look a little different,
or have a "funny name".
Every human is flawed,
We dig our own graves,
Eight Billion people,
Who do not want to be saved.
We have come so far,
but we have to do more,
to be better than primates,
looking for war.
Eight billion minds,
That think only of one.
And how they can prosper,
alone in their fun.
Religion and Government,
forms of control.
That tell you to fight,
for country and soul.
The heathens that march,
against the life that you made,
must be destroyed!
It's the only way!
Build us our bombs,
our weapons in space,
expand our borders,
war is a race!
Money and lead,
power and greed,
These are the things,
we are taught to need.
Complicated desires,
from animalistic wants,
pollute the whole planet,
by "draining the swamp".
We call ourselves modern,
With our dollars and glass,
but our future is as dismal,
as our most recent past.
A species divided,
is one doomed to fail.
And there's so much to lose,
with a world this frail.
Are we together?
Or alone in a crowd.
A decision must be made.
and it has to be now.
