Like any other Friday
I wake up early
get ready and
go work

but...

today,
I heard them,
and paused as I took
that first step out of the front door

the screams of my ancestors,

the desperate plea from
wrongly accused men,

the last words and breathe
of every black man,
woman,
and child
murdered in cold blood...

I heard their warning.
“Don’t go.”

I called off work.

As a black man in America, it is common knowledge that as soon as I take a step outside, I am in danger. Justice in this country is non-existent (as if it ever existed in the first place for my people).

Thank you, ancestors.
for the warning.

I find myself floundering and drowning
In a country not made for me
I find myself clinging to fantasies
Where I **** over the very systems
That have binded me from birth
Until I remember
I was never meant to flourish
In a society created and maintained by
Them
And that they would and will
Never
Allow me to prosper as they all have
some days it's harder to fight back than others
Tina McKenzie Jan 2016
If they come for you at night
I will be gone by morning
Sirens deafen the silence
Of a society in decline
Real eyes realize real lies
stand down or stand aside
Diving deep to drown in a cesspool of demise
Profit at any cost
Left us morally bankrupt
and without rights

Living in a world
Where far too many don't make enough to buy food
While the rich have plenty
No more can we plow fields
As hunger builds
They confuse you to think
This is how sacrifice is
It does nothing for me
But bring pain and worry
They said the ultimate sin is not earning a living
Same ones consumed by greed and not giving
Life ain't fair unless you pay the fare
Fear burns in the air
They call it an -ism
But it's Spiritual warfare

High eyes
Hidden lies
Realize
A compromise/ Violence in disguise
A noose is the new suit and ties
We are morphing into one- jobs 9 to 5
Sleeps schedules are identical- tired eyes
We are our own
but you are I, you's and I's
Laws to abide
Words to coincide
Strong people- scared- run and hide
You are us or you are them- chose a side
America the Great- America the Free
They lied
