The moment before I fall asleep
It's hot and oppressive,
Like a down comforter in the summer
Which simultaneously swaddles and suffocates me
Unti I succumb to my subconscious

It's a nervous trust fall
Where I kick back my heals and close my eyes
But sleep catches me
And fills my mind with nothing
So that I may consider everything

It's heavy and gentle all at once
A push and a pull
A relief
A release

I daydream at night
About tracing your lips with my fingers
And running my hands through your hair
About the inconvenience of intimacy
When you're there
And I'm here
But then I remember
That dreams are for children

You warmed me

You were the coat
That hung in my closet
The scarf
I draped over my shoulders
The sweater
I wore when it was windy
The clothes
In my drawers
On my back

You were the boiler
In my basement
And the color in my skin

When you left me
I was cold

Your voice was as sweet as a siren
A conscious contradiction
You said that love is impossible
But I heard the waves inside your ribcage
And saw you smile upside-down
