I met the man by chance on that riverside town.

The only one around at the deserted strand
I asked him the shortest way out
after I had my fill of the river.

He told me about the fish market
where the fresh catches arrive every morn
and the place ten minutes farther north
where if I slowed down
could catch the magnificent spectacle
of the orange orb thirstily dipping in the river
and if I stayed back for the night
would surely go insane
when the moon sets the river on silver fire
but if I was really intent on leaving
a half hour's drive would get me the highway.

I was thinking of the amazing mathematical probability
of my traveling over three hours to see the river
and his traveling ten minutes on a bicycle
to fetch his son from school on that riverside town
for our once-a-lifetime meeting on the life's highway
and then having him a permanent visitor in my memory
at sunsets and moonrises over the river.
What are these bodies, these
limbs, giving up their sap
and heat? Who decides
who dies, who lives?

What is cut down is
cut down, and
bereft children
grow in their place.
Upside down you walk the clouds
And you are unaware
You touch your feet on moonbeans
They are a golden stair

You breathe under the ocean
Peruse the coral reefs
Dance with the yellow fishes
Tell them your beliefs

The Earth is actually the sky
Cars are birds that fly on by
You query raindrops - they don't lie
You pet doves - they're never shy
And the rainbows never die
You never stop to question why

You see angels. You hear ions.
You smell blue. You touch the eons.
The beggers rule. The bankers peons.
Are these things we can agree on?

Your hair's a cloud. Your skin's a glove.
The sun is flat. The Earth's above.

Let's just face it...

You're in LOVE!

Tonight the fog settles
on the water reflecting

a dark mood, and the moon
is genuflecting to the blues

resting one knee on the cold
silent sea taking off his hat

as if to say *May I rise now
and take my leave and leave

you be, for tomorrow will
surely be a brighter day?
