Defeated
in neither hope nor
expectation
shall I ever be,
so thru the ancient
purpose
will vague dissatisfaction,
grief
that irks us,
and suspicions of rivalry
be
left without resources
to that industry.

But still I lie
motionless by
the
need
of my subdued nature,
to the pleasure of
this faulty
constitution.

The justifiable respect

I

have for you
due to the strength I
see in your resolution
-tho the vanity you choose breeds a
serene indifference
which
I cannot undo
by a paltry solution- you
must move me by slow degrees
to believe
that
with a less conservative
self-reliance,
we will
be
honest enough
to admit this
-we already have
a severed
alliance.
