Until the Very End

I promised you

I’d be there

until the very end.

From the day I met you,

I knew

I would protect you

through every waking night.

With your paw in my hands,

I made that promise again —

I’ll hold you

until the very end.

We never thought

it would come so suddenly.

I never thought

I would lose you so fast.

My heart is heavy now,

a hollow in my chest

where your breathing used to be.

You taught me love

in its purest form,

steady even

in the middle of the storm.

Your love moves through me still,

and I will never let it go.

You were my best friend,

my heart,

the reason I kept going.

You fought for me,

and I fought for you —

and when it was time,

I did not leave your side.

Now you are gone,

and though we both knew

it was time,

I need you to know —

You will always be remembered.

You will always be

my baby boy.

I love you, Brody.

My beloved, treasured boy.
