I don’t remember when it was
Sometime in my childhood
In that jumble of hazy memories
When I prayed to God and said,

“Not my mind, Father
“You can have any part of me.
“Do what you will with my body,
“But please don’t take my mind.”

And somehow I knew
Laying there in my bed in the dark
That it was that which I loved the most
The only thing I held above Him

that was precisely what He would take.
