African man, he says
my hut may not be tidy
but my head correct and tidy
because common sense
can make bed anywhere

African man, he says
*** no go feed my hunger
nobody die from no ***
but plenty die from no job

African man, he says
when the baby for cry all the time
Not only mother awake
but baby and neighbours stay awake too
So we all suffer together

African man he says
the magician that puts fried yam
in his mouth, and then say
look people, it's not there, it's gone
is only fooling himself

African man, he says
when you point one finger at another
four fingers are pointing back
at your chest, Mr Pointer

African man, he says
you cannot catch fresh fish
in a dry river
so carrying line and hook
and standing by the river bank every day
means your brain done dry like the river

African man, he says
common sense is so common
that common people have refused
to have to own it and now
chase foolishness, stupidity, lies
and duplicity as the valuables
