Silence was the sole vessel
of emotions that lived within
the deepest are the most hungry
cloaked in quiet desperation
inky depths absorb the din
of deepest sobs and righteous screams
conspiracies feed the abyss
it’s our own, nothing else.

The air descends to suppress
a blanket meant to suffocate
invoked to mold with dark intent
more from less to spoil a life
a toxic mix burbling
seeking pain to be renewed
sensation asks for the same
a love of hurt in quiet space.

Perhaps mere words are enough
to find a way to escape
by the word or by the voice
inscribed to page or video
these I’ll proclaim as an escape
disrupting pain in sunlight’s beam
while the night seeks to own
a calm too deep in death’s last call.

Serenity soon becomes the lie
a tomb for spirits that could heal
if only voice could rise above
shake the chains, allow the love
I’ll find a sound to break the grip
end the hush that cripples me
no longer silent as I find hope
rise above to save the soul.

“Silence Was” was inspired by Marianne Moore’s quote, “the deepest feeling always shows itself in silence.”
