children dream
in peaceful slumber
no monster intrudes
on their gentle breathing -
as soft    as delicate
as their first prayer

           but somewhere
           some unfathomable nightmare
will soon spread over the landscape
           watching
           waiting
           hovering

           impatient
           for this innocent night
           to end
