Wide eyed awake,
Lying on a sweaty mattress that has become a restless tomb,
I stare blankly into frozen space and feel the slow dripping of the night,
I wrestle with the worries that coil and knot like an elaborate thorn-edged ribbon dance,
Slow breathing, focus on your breath they say,
Shut your eyes, shut them now!
But I can feel my wide awake eyes rolling beneath their lids,
I try to strangle thoughts as they come in like uninvited party guests bearing bowls of rancid food,
But as I desperately strangle, clenching my hands together tighter and tighter,
They take off their coats and hats, and look like they're here to stay.
