Take a breath. It's almost over now. Everything ends. Here, under these clouds and hundreds of miles between then and now, the border is in sight. The very sudden edge we've always been walking towards. Don't wait until the sun goes down to tell them. Don't scream inside yourself when shoulders are offered to share the burden. Don't drift out to that island and know, in your bones, that you'll be okay. That you're better off alone. Because you are. You will be. But you still won't wake to the sound of laughter. You'll still feel cold and dry and far away from the fire. Misery fades. Happiness goes away. Everything ends. Take a breath. Tell them. It's almost over now.
