Said words from a book today What I said I couldn’t say Monotoned words of drowsy prayer Looking on with vacant stare Watch life itself just sail ahoy In vessel made of brilliant boy Celebrate his life? I can— Boy who barely made a man. No time at all he’d have for this, Stride out that door and take what’s his, Set fast upon that Icarus sun, With sixty seconds worth of distance run. Now there’s nowhere left to go Scattered fields of tears and joy Add me to the earth and rock Thrown upon that wooden box All of you just leave me here Truly think he’d like me near Tethered by my daughter’s hand, Her fingers stay me to this land. Looks up at me with honest fear, Force down to her a smile sincere. Console myself he traveled far— My upright boy, my shooting star.
