The place was heaving. I danced half-on the threadbare carpet by the bar. He watched. Deliberately and slowly - I swayed, flickered in and out with the monochrome glare. His mouth was on mine; his fingers found me wanting. (he made sure i got home safely and called round with flowers the next day. he told me my dress was perfect, that i was beautiful. he said later - he was hooked, knew without hesitation - i was his girl) The bedroom was drenched in shades of rust, so that sunlight licking through curtains painted our skin with flames. I ****** myself from around his knuckles; he burned too hot. I was a curling, kinking cellophane fish on his palm. (i'd worn my white slip. he told me - if he could see my underwear, everyone could. that i dressed like a twelve year old child. we left early. he promised me later that he was only thinking of my reputation) A fresh cut on the heel of my hand smarted against metal poles. I cadged a pinch of salt from the food-van, fed it into the wound and waited. It stung even more and kept hurting - so I licked away the grains, gnawed the wound. That worked. (don't know if i nicked it on the strike-plate as i grabbed the door frame; or caught it on his st christopher when i put my hands in front of me. he swore later that he was only trying to hold me - stop me from leaving)
