We could hear the sea before we had even left the rear gate. I was pushing you in the wheelchair to get there. The gate clicked shut and we were away on the path by the beach. "Won't the nursing sisters wonder where we are?" I said. "Who gives a hoot" you said "we're on our way now." We passed people on the path and you said "Make way I haven't got all day." I pushed you faster. "That's it Kid faster get me to the pier." The beach was crowded with holiday makers. "Look what the sun's brought out Kid evolution in reverse" you bellowed. I pushed you up to the pier. I was resting getting my breath back. " You o.k. Kid?" You said looking up at me. "Just getting my breath back" I said. I pushed the wheelchair on to the pier and we rested gazing out to sea. "Get that sea air in your lungs Kid" you said "this is the fecking life away from the nuns and other sick kids." On the horizon ships passed. On the beach below kids had buckets and spades and some adults lay in deckchairs asleep or gazing at the beach or sea. You sent me to buy two ice creams one for you and one for me.
