Or whoever you mean can't live up to your expectation of tenderness. 
I had a relationship where I lost myself so much in my partner, that I ignored all of my fundamental needs and got very unhappy with myself and with her. Suddenly we fighted all the time, cause I tried to find something in her, I actually tried to find in me.
I think honesty is one of the keys and maybe trying to talk, when the triggered emotions, which are mostly ghosts of the past, cooled off a bit.
