The thermometer beneath her tongue read 100.8, and sweat shimmered across the blush blooming over her nose. The tightening in her lower abdomen whispered that her fears were no longer fears at all. The cramping came in waves each one sharper, crueler than the last but it wasn't the pain that told her the truth, it was the blood. Scarlet beads trailed down the insides of her thighs, gleaming like wet rubies as they pattered onto the hardwood floor. in that moment, the heartbreak took shape suddenly real, suddenly heavy. Her body was releasing the future she had carried, quietly, secretly, hopefully, letting go of the dream she had nurtured for as long as she had understood the meaning of creation.
