I don't agree. This seems to me more a rationalization than a truth.
We wouldn't be caught up in trying to 'achieve something' if it didn't have meaning to us or someone close to us. But not achieving it, we rationalize our failure by saying, 'Ah, it wasn't important to me to begin with.' The statement you make to yourself lessens the sting of defeat. So, what we have to honestly ask ourselves is, 'If I did achieve this goal, would I have a feeling of fulfillment or accomplishment?'

Perhaps you and Beryl both have a point. It would depend on the context. In certain situations, the thought may well turn out to be a rationalization. In another situation, you may be right. If it's a rationalization, we may turn our attention to something at which we DO succeed - and succeed brilliantly.  The failure may simply suggest it's not our line of work. We may begin thinking that achieving something is important because our parents value it and we value their opinions - but we fail. Then we rationalize the failure... But the rationalization can nonetheless lead to what we truly love, regardless of what our parents say. A rationalization can still be useful. And more to the point: What is intelligence? A distinction must be made between DOING something stupid and BEING stupid. We all do stupid things but we also do intelligent things. Bobby Fischer was a genius in chess, but an idiot when it came to politics and relating to people. To characterize someone as "stupid" is itself stupid. One failure does not a failure make.
