Normal Day

It’s just a normal day

I wake up at 5

Go for a run

Don’t eat anything

Even though my head feels light

It’s just a normal day

I get off the bus

And go to my first class

I complain about a test

That I know I will pass

It’s just a normal day

Second period

The loudspeaker hums

Must be a drill

Like the hundreds we’ve done

It’s just a normal day

I hear the footsteps

Running down the hall

And the screams

That aren’t normal at all

It’s just a normal day

My best friend won’t respond

I text my parents with shaking hands

Wondering if I’ll soon be gone

It’s just a normal day

I hear the doorknob rattle

The desks are piled in front

But we still stay hidden

Too scared to confront

The monster that no longer lives

Under the bed

Instead it’s here

Filling me with dread

It’s just a normal day

The bang goes off

And the desks topple down

A girl starts to cry

And I wish I could drown

In her tears because

That’s better than what’s coming

It’s just a normal day

There’s a man there

Holding what reminds me of a water gun

Like I would use on summer days

When I was quite young

It’s just a normal day

But all I can think of

Is that we will fade away

Another statistic

A headline for people to pray

That their kids won’t go through this

And yet it’s the reality we live in

It’s just a normal day

Because I’ve learned to be afraid

I wrote this one to spread awareness. It isn't talked about enough how horrible these events are, and how quickly they are forgotten
