I should be sorry for being white.
but I don't look down upon others,
still I should feel bad.
for what happened in the past
somehow, I am responsible

they put me down
telling me I can't understand
all lives matter. 
but only if you are part of a minority.

I should be sorry for being white.
I should apologize for the things I never did,
things I never said and never thought. 

because just the fact that I was born with a different skin color makes me unsympathetic and evil. 

the fact that I am white means I am stupid,
means I am responsible,
automatically places me in the wrong. 
I am constantly reminded of my inability to empathize. 

all because I am white.

This took courage to write and you emphasized a point many people (of all races,genders,etc) feel. Thank you. It's wonderfully written and relatable. We are all human in the end, it's the media that's pushing people into focusing on skin colour. We're all less of a threat if we're pitted against eachother.

I'm glad you shared this Ruby. No one, white or black, should feel sorry for being what they are. That, too, is what blacklivesmatter is about, but the truth is that, in tangible ways, they (and minority groups everywhere) are subjected to invisible systemic forces that exist in our economies and languages that exert a kind of violence on these groups. A good deal of that is from our history, no doubt. You here people talk of the fabric of society; I see it being woven together, each action and reaction, another thread. You, of course, are not responsible for the past. But you and I both are responsible for our future. Easier said than done but I say: love yourself first, and then go love the hell out of everyone else too :)

I'm white, and I've never felt this way.  You're speaking of a thing I beleive a minority of whites actually feel.

You see yourself or even myself being white has nothing to do with what white people have done in the past. If we were all in the "past" all of us would be dead now with no future. It's pathetic don't let being white be your downfall. The only downfall is the actions you do and not what others have done BEFORE you.

Courageous piece but I really believe that the problem is people think racism is of the past. That&#8217;s what black lives matters rails against. I think that believing racism is simply a thing of the past is what makes a person seem unsympathetic

you need to check your privilege. Its clear that you don't understand where minorities are coming from. you don't have to apologies that your white but you do need to acknowledge that in life because you are white that there are some disadvantages and struggles you will never go through.
