Splayed out on cardboard thin mattress
But a head up in the clouds
Dreaming up pretty excuses
Mistruths: tools of the trade
My personal language
All dialogue founded on disguise
We need not converse with veracity
Or at least, human nature presupposes that
Truth is a commodity
in uncertain times
Why submit and envelop in vulnerability?
So I lie, and lie, and lie…

Conversation is inherently subtextual. If dramatic irony were a business, it would make a fortune of the chats we have with others. Secrecy exists in every word uttered and honesty is a scarcity. I too have fallen prey to this societal hypernormalisation of white lying and evasion of topics: it is safer not to provoke or intrude. Lying is paramount to the efficacy of human communication, as it helps to buttress civility and ensure the sustainability of polity. If we were all truthful, it can be imagined that the world would descend into fiery chaos. But chaos is not all that bad, if it incites proper change; exposure of the clandestine.
