Come with me and be my love, he whispered, although he uttered it in French as he did when the mood took him; he could recite a shopping list in French and make it sound romantic, but I didn't reply, I just looked at him over my glass of white wine, and hated it when we stopped at one of those cafés in Paris, and he would utter things to those waitresses with their perfect figures and bright eyes and they would giggle and nod and write down the order and walk away with their wiggle of hips, and as my French was limited, I didn't know what he was saying to them, and I imagined all things, and I just glared at the waitress and he would smile in that way he had, and I would forgive him for the umpteenth time for any imaginable crime.
