The Pholem
Located just underneath a tree trunk or branch’s outermost layer of bark is a layer known as the phloem. This layer is made up of live, spongy cells that form a pipeline to deliver nutrients derived from photosynthesis throughout the tree. This layer lives only for a short time before dying and becoming part of the tree’s protective outer layer of bark.
