And Austen, the crafts teacher, said: here, bring up your attempt at pottery, show them, boy. So I took up my attempted pottery and held it up. The kids looked and one or two laughed on cue, but the others sat glum, waiting for the punchline which didn't come. Weren't you watching when I demonstrated how it was to be done? Austen said. I held down the *** guess I didn't see it all. Why not? he said. You were you going too fast, I replied. Too fast? who else thinks I was going too fast? No kid put up their hand of course. I suggest boy you were not watching or your brain is too slow; go sit down and listen. I walked back with my *** and sat down placing my *** carefully on the desk. The teacher eyed me, then went on to show how it was to be done. The kid next to me hid his from sight with his hands; it was worse than mine, but there you go, I mused, couldn't give a hoot about pots or pottery; it meant nothing at least to me.
