She was young, pale, with dark hair and
A smile he knew was only partly born of a warm
And generous nature.
In her way she was very beautiful.
Her needs were few but intense he knew, and he
Immediately proposed
That she stay with him,
An arrangement to sustain her life.
It included his commitment of unconditional love,
An illusion usually limited to those far younger.
But, implicitly, and with her understanding -
She was no fool,
His proposal included the ultimate pre-nuptial agreement:
Time,
The cardiac divorce;
No lawyer would be hired for that one.
