The secrets that I keep have swam at the bottom of the sea for too long,
They were kept in darkness under pressure bursting anyone who tried to reach them,
I suffered in silence,
Too ashamed to ever speak of it,
I placed the blame on myself like I was the cause of it,
And with the years the layers of armour became too heavy to carry,
With each step slowing my progression,
It's time to speak upon the things that were done to me,
So I can break this generational curse,
There won't be another victim,
It ends here with me,
I finally grew into a woman,
I am no longer a fearful child,
I held onto this secret, this armour for 30 yrs,
And when I finally spoke the person that I told held onto the same dark family secret,
I've come to learn we coped the same,
We healed the same,
And that person is my mother,
And now we have an understanding,
What we hid in the shadows was not our shame to carry,
We took back power the day we faced them silently with judging eyes faces never twisting,
What hid in shadows isn't our cross to bare,
With a single word we can dismantle all they hold so dearly,
But we keep the silence knowing this unsettles them,
We took back power when we didn't let the pain turn us into life long victims,
I will not dwell in the past for it no longer suits me,
I will not wear their stain like it's a badge of honor,
We took back power when we turned up noses,
Riding horses while you just ride ponies well beneath us,
What shaped my mother,
What stained in me,
Will never touch my daughter
