My brothers, I heard you out on the highway, tell me the Lies of Speed. Is it Her, is it Them, or is it the wind? I know the answer doesn’t matter, because each of us has our own. Its our beating heart yearning for the ride, coursing among the cars, into the lean, on the gas and out onto the straight. Death may not be the pillion this time, but He lurks in the gravel and guardrails- and sometimes He is roving the highway. Out of the press of the cages, rpm lights green then yellow then white and then the rarest, red. The engine opens up, the induction howl radiates louder than the blast of the wind. There is no slack out beyond the Ton and we never asked for any. We will never know When. But all of us know, even safe inside the cage, in the air conditioning and the podcasts, that He is already there in the back seat. Look into your mirror. Our nature requires us to meet Him out in the open. Perhaps He is a friend today, but someday it will be His hand on our shoulder. It will not be a surprise, we knew it was coming when we first sat on a bike.
