That phrase far from the madding crowd, could well have come from Thomas Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard:

Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife,
         Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray;
Along the cool sequester'd vale of life
         They kept the noiseless tenor of their way.

I love this haiku. I have Thomas Hardy ebooks that I have never read, but Far From The Madding Crowd is the only title I could name off the top of my head. I will read it one day.
