One moment can last forever,
suspended in the air.
It can disappear in the blink of an eye,
a puff of smoke that may or may not have ever been there
at all.

It all started with a moment.

He brushed aside my auburn hair
with cold hands,
sent a shiver down my spine
and electricity coursing through my veins.

I could feel his breath on my ear,
warm and sweet,
could feel the scratch of his chin,
unshaven against my cheek.

His heart beat through his shirt,
light pitter-patters against the cotton,
and he shook as if every nerve
was about to explode, every
expectation about to shatter.

His nose glided against mine,
breath hot on my face as he
knelt his head towards mine and stared,
our eyes locked in a
beautiful magical terrifying
gaze.

And we knew that this was it,
it was our turn to make the rules and
our turn to chase the night and
our turn to understand and
our turn to -

It all ended with a moment.

memories
slip into darkness
hide in the recesses of my mind
trust love betrayal pain
blend together
whirl together
a dizzying mess of
questions answers
uncertainty
and in the center of it
focus
i focus on the
shell
clean shining
filled with grains of sand
from days long past
sand that filled your hand
sand that snuggled between your
toes
salty air cool water
whipping
whirling
against my face
like the memories
and the darkness
curls around them once again

the stars shelter you
hold you
in their light
warm
glowing
stark against the icy
black night.
the grass tickles your cheek
droplets of dew
cling
to your eyelashes
sparkle
under our starry blanket.
And i
i hold you close
feel your light
warm
glowing
watch your eyelashes
sparkle
and i
i cling to you
pull our starry blanket
up to our chins
over our heads
certain this moment
is the only moment
we will ever know.
