fall short
Tom May 2020
wondrous nights are those upon your gaze
drawn ever deeper into your haze.

a passing thought
once more to fall short

a curtain envelopes the mind
uncovering a feeling so unkind
What if you give your all, and it's still not enough?

trace
Tom Apr 2020
i still see your face when i close my eyes, as though you are still with me here. but will you tell me, is this not your greatest fear? how could you leave the world without a trace? or will our bond stay alight in place?

run
Tom Mar 2020
run
five-thousand strides through the greyish plain
thoughts pass through
as the green of the spring, brings a nascent smile
i keep my rhythm and ignore the pain
as i grow more weary
i leave it all behind
with each passing breath
and the path shows clearly

words
Tom Mar 2020
i cannot capture the words in my head
they are in there
somewhere
but will not be read
i wish i could care
but my mind lay bare
but it will be told, i said
they will hear me once I am dead

goodbye
Tom Mar 2020
and i said goodbye
through filtered glass
my hand
a shadow
my voice
a blur
i chased you
and you met my gaze
until you were gone, completely
a quarter-past three
the end of
you and me

HK
Tom Nov 2019
HK
lay those bricks on the ground
protect what you hold dear
drown in the sound
so quiet you cannot hear

city birds they run free
from cages of metal and rising smoke
but my brothers next to me
take a breath only to choke

there is nothing we can do
but we can only try
say it over again till it rings true
'this city will never die'
My girl is currently stuck in HK and I am counting the days until she is with me again.

Shout
Tom Oct 2019
lamenting paths we walk
a maze, a fork
leave me no breath to talk
lamenting paths we walk

o shoots i nourish
watch as they flourish

shout out, sky!
to where you will fly
shout out, sky!
oh my, oh my!

i love, i love
trails of a dove
for when i look above
i am here, dreaming of

Untitled (Seven-Hours)
Tom Oct 2019
lemon drops
and worn-out tops
pre-made meals
and vintage steals

nothing ever changes
unless you want it to
broken circles
if only I knew

damp-stained walls
and cropped overalls
books half-read
and plants unfed

eagerly awaiting
for when it comes around
the thousandth time
lost as the first

unkempt sheets
and forgotten feats
time zones
and preset ringtones
Unfinished

Encounter
Tom Oct 2019
contemplative
carriages rattle
distant stares
avoiding interaction
cold heat
runs of length
of my spine
soon i will seek to know
details of a life
talking in rhymes
that pass the time
will this be
another white lie
will this be
my time to die

Passer-by
Tom Dec 2018
in your living room
empty walls
hold true
fragments of memories

a silhouette
a shadowy figure
catches the eye
not you
but a passer-by

Promises (Unspoken)
Tom Dec 2018
take a moment to understand
what you ask of me
breathe once, deeply.
let the minutes pass you by

here, i will remain
a breath apart
a promise unspoken
tacit to my heart

if only a moment
of common understanding
a cover
for all you are hiding

Cracks Between
Tom Jun 2018
What can I do to break your fall?
I can only watch as you slide
Into the cracks that formed
Before loss felt so heavy

Where is the light?
Staring back at me
I see beauty lying in wait
But you have grown blind

Blind
I will stand
And watch
At your side

Unknowing of the cause
Of the reason
Of how to break
The darkness in your eyes

Gazing Beyond
Tom May 2018
On an open plain
Gazing beyond
A mirage of light

Distant from those
Who hold me under
Grasping for breath
In an ocean of hurt

For I am alone
In this voyage
But for the thoughts
That cloud my view

Upon clear skies
An opening
Distant from those
Who hold me under

Walk as I must
Kicking up the dust
Between my tired feet
And the heavy ground

The path is long
But that I know
Step by step
The seeds will sow

When the Wind Blows
Tom May 2018
What happens when the wind blows?
I feel as though nobody knows
Is it the trees pausing to breathe
Or a body taking its leave?

What happens when the wind blows?
As the night draws in, it only grows
Showing the path as a guiding light
Only a passenger to its daily fight

What happens when the wind blows?
I will follow wherever it goes.

Never Forget
Tom May 2018
I cannot think
I cannot breathe
This thought keeps pounding
It will not leave

No matter how I try
This thought keeps pounding

No matter my cry
This thought keeps pounding

It tells me
I am wrong to forget
Wrong to take a step
Wrong

How could you?
Do you not care?

To Forget Yourself
Tom May 2018
I was once wise, but now, old
All I am, is shelter from the cold

Stripped back, until survival is all
Hold me steady and delay my fall

But the signs are clear, they are my fear
Who keeps their will, when their end is clear?

A forgotten fool for facing it whole
But who's to say denial heals the soul?

I see in your eyes, a reminder of the days
Before i saw you in disturbing haze

You ask me one last time, to remember our dreams
But they're of another life and i'm tearing at the seams
This poem is from the point of view of a dementia victim, who is trying to tell their partner that they know it's over for them, and that it is better to accept it, but cannot bring this point across.

Next Time, Maybe
Tom May 2018
Is there a pill tougher, than that of time?
Swallow or not, it marches on
Caring not for thoughts of apathy
So don't waste a life, wondering on
Places you'd see, or people you'd rather be
People won't stand aside, and welcome you to
The dreams you lock up for none to see

For i see a blank canvas, without a story to share
Shutting out undeserving company
They don't know your dreams, you don't care for theirs
They only remind you, of you
So, to another day spent staring, at these four walls
As blank as the canvas, you call your life

All the Flowers
Tom Apr 2018
I sit across from you, you stare into my eyes and say
All the flowers, they wilt in the end
They will never return, not in the same
Some victories come easy and some losses never leave
Some people walk away no matter what you say
But new roots will grow, faster than you know
Not everything is for a lifetime, so permanent and still
The world is transient and so are you
But don’t be fooled you’ve got a life to lead
It’s just not your time to win this time
Wait and little while and you’ll see
All the flowers, they will rise again

Distant Love
Tom Apr 2018
As your excitement flows from your body to mine i know you’re the key to my ending entropy

All i desire is to grasp you by the arm but it’s your words i read when it’s your voice i need

Yes, i’ve heard it through the phone but it’s not the same until you call my name

A missed chance and a party to blame, i know it’s me, come and collect the guilty fee

Uncertainty grows as its arms surround me, pushing on my heaving chest pulling me from my rest

Will i one day sit beside you in a room empty but for our energy?

Winter Blues
Tom Apr 2018
when the rain ceases to pour
a blanket over your mind
when you hear the heavens roar
never so kind
as the winter refuses to end
and the flowers wait another day
you think of the letters you didn’t send
and the words you couldn’t say
and with each setting sun
you wish for the bloom
reminding winter is done
with the end of your gloom

His Jagged Edges
Tom Apr 2018
his jagged edges strike fear
into your heart as your draw near
the dark of his broken alley
holds the end of many

blanketed in the winter snow
blinded from what lies below
for many have found
broken feet upon this ground

on this path you will find
a fading sense of time
as he draws you in
through lights growing dim

he lets out a gentle whisper
of where he left her
he calls out your name
but you refuse his game

Those Dark Thoughts of Mine
Tom Apr 2018
your body weighs heavy
what made you this way?
lost between the branches
of your failing will

who stole your voice?
and kept you contained
you would sing as a bird
now you will not fly

can you trace the origin?
can you dig yourself?
out of this fever
that surrounds you

no I will not leave
no matter how you push
and shelter yourself
from loving company

if this maddened world
consumes you whole
i’ll dig another hole
right beside yours

The Hermit
Tom Mar 2018
hauled up with a cavernous protector
far away from the dawn light
loss of distinction, morn and night
departed from those you love

casting a thought
to before you were a passenger
laid bare in this damp shelter
waiting for the walls to cave in

the days you took pleasure
in the meaningless endeavour
of the artificial existence
are replaced by days

so broken by monotony
and the plight of the many
so you sook a life most solitary
where your thoughts weigh heavy

each day you think of them
their optimism and naivety
as you draft another letter
destined for nowhere

as years take their toll
and the days feel like weeks
and your joints ache with growing ferver
you draft another letter
The hermit in this little tale is tired of the structure of everyday life, and has escaped to a place where he can live on his own terms.

for i was
your lover
and
as we sit quietly in your

recover
for soon we will part ways
and you'll be in the
arms
of another

A life, taken
Tom Mar 2018
it was us
then it was me
who could have known?
how it would change
the way you

the way we

it was a mistake
who could have known?

taken
but not meant to be
I know i'm to blame
I know that's how you see
but you were there
the same
who could have known?

not me

memories

laughing together
