Sometimes
it seems harder
when we're in the same room

because
even from across the room
you seem
too far away

like if I can't
reach for your hand
or wrap my arm
around your shoulder
rest my head
against your chest
or kiss your cheek

you must not
be close enough

and when I think
you're too far away
when you're across
the room
I wonder
how we do it

when I can only
see you through a screen
only hear you
on the phone
only touch you in my dreams

and when I want to be so close
that even close enough
seems far

I wonder how I manage
to be so far away from you
only dreaming
of a distance
small enough

that I can reach for your hand
or wrap my arm
around your shoulder
rest my head
against your chest
or kiss your cheek.
