Hand in Hand
Amanda McElroy Mar 2017
We stopped tonight ahead of time to make tomorrow last forever

and drank our coffee black in the wake of morning sins.

Squaring Off
Amanda McElroy Feb 2017
I twirled with the
Devil to watch
You get jealous

        And

With his final
Bow I knew we
Had finally learned
To Dance

Taxi Cab
Amanda McElroy Dec 2016
There weren't a ton of places I even wanted to be - so I figured right here was fine.

Frightened, yes. You were still strange to me - despite your lips being just the ones I needed to find.

The rocking didn't stop, the lights were unkind, and I thought how much better it would have been to stay til the end of the party and walk to the train and wait til morning for Jersey.

You
Amanda McElroy Aug 2016
You
Sun rays are the triumph of the cold and nowhere night.
A reward of peace - not touched -
Turn on the light.

Jealous Sea
Amanda McElroy Aug 2016
A fall from grace through the cape of ice.
Here, a paradise where regular worlds gather.

They care not who stands at the door. Just  that it has been opened.

Every Sun
Amanda McElroy Aug 2016
You made to shine

In muddy waters, rusted wires,

muted hues of two tone sweaters, tangled hair and sleep filled eyes,

were once the chains of this steadfast child,

             starving.

Morning From Maine
Amanda McElroy May 2016
The end of the world
Is covered in swells of sunlit tides
That welcome the day from a celibate night
With a spell of siren wind song

i knew we should be married that night at the bar with your legs spread open and a thrusted arm agreeing with vengeance to another's opinion on the fit of your shirt and a smile my way as if it was something i hadn't known

One Cent Rituals
Amanda McElroy Sep 2015
I see now that you too appreciate the one cent rituals -

the ones never to amount to
much , but take away an
            inevitable alone.

Morning Reverie
Amanda McElroy Sep 2015
Days I wake, wanting to be your wife-

take your clothes from the floor,
throw away your old food,

tell you I've got things to do as I kiss you good-bye, tip-toed,

while you fix your top button and I reach, arms bent, to your shoulders and wait til you're done with that **** button so you can wrap two hands round my waist to humor me with an open eyed peck to the side of wanton lips.

Off Cloud 9
Amanda McElroy Dec 2014
A heart beats fonder as you feel it -
in the voice of a distant dream,

that circles around a city
so familiar - and  yet

you never did realize  how deep its rain clouds cast their spell

If I Do Say So Myself
Amanda McElroy Apr 2013
This life is
yours

and yours alone.

So just keep going
and forget not who
you are
and from where
you have come.

Return To Sender
Amanda McElroy Apr 2013
A fun house, haunted house,
I won't live here anymore.

I was halfway to
your house and
turned
around because I hadn't locked my door;

It's too heavy to keep
swinging back and
forth. So please, make
sure you take all of
your belongings before
exiting the carousel.

A fun house, haunted house,
I won't live here anymore.
