What if

What if me
what if you
What if we
Knew how to

turn hate into love,
fear into trust
then open our hearts
see all of us

What if we
smiled at each other
forgave and forgot
trusted one ‘nuther

Simple things
we make them so hard
But who am I
Some silly bard

"Bard" is a term not in my daily vocabulary. But I thought I'd try rhyming a bit, see how that felt.

I saw Him on the street
He walked right on by
I waved and I danced
I even said “hi.”

I went to His House
I knocked on His door
Jesus Himself
Said "There’s room for no more."

God, He don’t know me
And if He does
He acts mighty strange

I call him at night
Sometimes daytime too
He asks for my name
Says, who, who are you.

God, he don’t know me
And if he does
He acts mighty strange
God, he don’t know me

Jesus, please help me
Y’Dad’s forgotten my name
He laughed and He laughed
And He said "Ain’t that a shame"

To dance, to smile
Perchance to dream
a little dream
of you, of me

the recipe stays
a mystery
for why and when
these dreams appear

staying, lingering
firming up
like a meringue
to satisfy

Like soldiers in a ghost army
Broken hearts rise
From the ashes of their jobs
Seeking each other, hoping

For another Sat’dy night
And it’s alright,
For another chance, another
dance, a smile, a kiss

And find their partner
for the night, for tomorrow.
And never again lie alone
Hoping, huddling, praying.

Watched you walk
Down the aisle last night
Shiny, bright and white
Starbursts trailing

Turned away, no one saw
Wiped on a smile
Clapped and laughed
At the right times

Faded out the door
Before the last 'I do'
No one saw me
No one needed to

Wash the dishes
Wipe the sink clean
Mop the bathroom floor
Wipe the shower stall dry

Drag the recycle bin to the curb
(**** ‘em off) Throw in a bag of trash
Tape the note on the laptop bag
Watch a movie

Put on clean underwear
Cover the bed in plastic
Open the windows
Keep the screens closed

Swallow the whole bottle
Drink the whole bottle
Fall asleep
Die

This is not a current to-do list. It's one I started awhile back, a long while back and can now look back at that time with a better perspective and not feel the depth of despair and pain and disconnection. To these better days, long may they ride.

I was born in Salisbury,
Salisbury,
I was born in Salisbury
And no one knows me there.

There’s no money in Spencer,
Spencer
There’s no money in Spencer
Everyone thinks that’s fair.

Granite Quarry is still there,
still there.
Granite Quarry is still there,
And so’s my fam’ly, too.

There’s strangers now in Charlotte,
Charlotte,
There’s strangers now in Charlotte
And they don’t even care.

Friday night I listened to the Jefferson County Green Band cover Greg Brown's The Fairfield Song. Driving home today, I started rhyming in my head. Here's the result. It's not as good as Greg Brown, Greg Brown. It's not as Good as Greg Brown, but that's okay too.
