I remember,
There were three sets of eyes
Curious eyes of strangers, adoring eyes of family and the envious eyes of my friends
Oh! The lucky girl got the beau.
I had a glass cup full of palm wine that
You and I had to drink from
I'd take a sip, and you'd drink it all
I should have known that it would remain so
Why did I keep dancing?
Even when I saw your eyes
Following not mine, but her every move
I should have known it would remain so.

Anyway, now I have your eyes
At the mercy of my blood tainted palm.

All my friends say I never kissed one frog
Yet I got a handsome prince
I see the envy still lingers like sparks of fire in their gazes
If only they knew my handsome prince turned into a filthy fly-fishing frog
Right after the kiss.

Anyway, now they'll see the frog for real
Your charming eyes are gone, I've split your nose
And your mouth opens to nothing but a toothless black hole
Your face, once able to launch a thousand ships,
Around which you built your glory
Now lies pale and bloated under the darkened clots of your bad blood.

I swore it was till death
How could you forget?
All the times you would hit me while I cried and begged,
Did you think I was pleading for my own life?
I said it was till death
I couldn't leave you while you lived.

I'm sure you get it now that your head lies apart your body
And Oh! Do not worry your dead head about your pride,
I'll dissolve it in acid
Before anyone else sees you're a 2inch limp.

This is not self defence
It has been my life since the first time
Remember Obi? in my story -'Stories of Forever', whose wife made nkwobi with his head,
And pounded Amala with his brown skin... That was you
You always asked why I chopped vegetables like they had done wrong
Now you know it was your fingers I saw instead of them poor veggies.
Now you see why I loved you more in red shirts,
Red is the colour of blood.

Your picture is a round of nice shots,
Yeah! So well aimed they missed the bull's eye for its heart

First shot -she is smiling MiNE the smile
That won't come to me. Even in dreams
While her perfectly slender arms sleep around you
Like a python curls a tree bearing the vulture's eggs

Second shot- you hold her too. ..with the passion
I so long for
Don't look at me like you don't know that
I crave and pine for you
As did the rich man in hell for a drop of heaven

Third shot -I can't take my eyes off
Somehow my heart finds home in being depressed
So what do I do if not stare while my blood is drained
Through my eyes

Fourth shot -the normal girl's gotten
I wanted to be her too wearing a beautiful smile
And a perfect life like that
Perfectly tailored dress of hers
Why is her hair so straight and mine can't stand a comb
If it's true that writing made me mad
Then why does she stand close to you
Where's her barbarian
The tails that allow her sail through trees in the wild
Where's her dirt stained teeth
And why hasn't she made a feast of you
Like I did, still do...
That's why you left, right

Sixth shot -No fifth was fired

Mama moaned in pain
While papa’s fists pounded into her skin
Every tear that dropped
From her eyes slid into the pores of my heart
Where they froze into ice spikes of anger

That day I learnt that love would hurt

I moaned
But didn’t understand why
Maybe because of her caress
But for a five year old bundle of innocence
The feelings that coursed through my veins
Were as alien as flowers from Mars
I still don’t know what emotions
They awakened in my heart
Till this day

But that day I learnt that love would betray

He moaned in pleasure
While I lay beneath his weight
Hands clasped forcefully together by his fist of iron
My warm tears flowed in reverse
Into the holes in my heart
Where they formed a pool that burned hot with hatred

That day I learnt that love would be selfish

A silence like death
Breezed into my soul
And kindled flames of oblivion
One so deep and dark shadows thinned out
A thick cloud of darkness
Clung to me
Even in the blinding rays of sun
Like a pet serpent would to its mistress

In this darkness
Nothing else existed
Not the silver streak of moonlight
As it peeped to earth
Through thick clouds of rain
Nor sweet singing of nightingales
And melody of trees dancing in the wind
Not a single life; a dead existence

Yet I loved it
Its deadness, nonexistence, secrecy
Its soft cold bite of the silence
As it sliced every piece of my heart to bits of bits
Its thickness
Coated the evil that lurked within and without
Sparing myself and others
The gory sight of my decaying mind
And foul stench of my rotten past reeking of mistakes

It left me lonely and broken
Yet rocked me like steady waves
In its cradle of safety
A chip off a diamond rock, it was
Broken but beautiful

But that was before you
Before dawn broke its way into my soul
Melting away the fence of ice
That kept my beating heart
From straying in search of warmth of light
Showing flowers; with their splashes of colour and fragrance
That in the sands of my mind
Lay a home fit for growth

Before you came
And showed me that darkness
Could never draw the last breathe from my pain and pasts
Nor could silence
Devour the crackling of flames that burnt within
Rather it made nothing of my broken pieces
Causing me to disappear in bits to oblivion

— The End —
