stuck with worry
To adult children of tired parents.

your parents worry
they worry sick
about you -
their sickness worries you
now you are
both sick with worry.
my advice --
acccept the worry --
it's normal
then -- fly far.
forget about it --
i have.

turn on some music
listen quietly
plan a walk in the sun
while the sun is out
dawn a mask
you won't go far
for now -
we know this
journey will end
how long
it will last depends
on our collective
acceptance and
care for each other.

It Is Like This
Eleo C Nora Oct 8
I would travel
the world
like it was breath
so normal -- so easy
surrounded by strangers
all inhaling and exhaling
in confined buses
trains - planes
we'd sit next to each
other share arm rests
spoke about our homes
like they were eggs
fragile and prepared -
something left behind
dishes in a sink - nothing.
Now my room is my world
finger nails crumbling from the
hand sanitizer - masks like flags
of obsure dictatorships
wait for me at my door
for my trips to
the recycling bin
to the market and
back inside again.

i could have picked
a fight with someone
instead i chose
to help them
remove a cross
they had to carrry.

i watch mens' hands
some look like pillows
soft and undefined
others are veined
and etched deeply
it doesn't mean
one type of hand
works harder
than the
it's just that
they are
different lands
these hands of men

After a day of being indoors,
I want to wander into the night.

Walk down the street
to the tented patio where people
were singing into morning.

Decide not to because our
greetings might carry you
and take us away.

went walking toward
wind for miles today.
needed air -- lots of it.
needed sleep too.
looked at photos instead.
realising that memories
are like air --
they both whisk by.

i comfort
myself and
know that
i showed him
the light switch

of your indifference
ease into my mind

i feel its worn edges
peel my facade gently
away as i become
unpried and free
of you and you.

we wish for more
anticipate wonder
and wonder if

Heard my petunias
and geraniums asking
each other if I had
stopped loving them.

I could sense their
panic as I passed
them - apologizing.

Tomorrow I will share water
and stream Spanish  music.

But I cannot coax
the warmth of the sun.

I translate a poem I wrote
using a language no one
will understand...
but it is the music
of leaves and letters
that dance as I play with the long
vowels and repetative
sounds which
brush beside
open ears and
urgent minds.

"Poems should be about love or nature, not money!"
Yelled the young business man.
Shaking my fist, I yell back,
"Why are you working?
For Shelter?
For Love?
For Time with Nature?
For Food and Wine?
For Future Children?
For Bird Song?
For Books of Poetry?"
"To pay taxes." He wept!

rushes of
traffic will
without me
in the streets
on the buses
in and out

i stop buying

invisible and
all i can do
is wonder
if anyone will
miss my
steps or
catch my face -
hovering in a
shop window?

Some leave too soon.
Work unfinished.
Love undone.
Departing comforts some.
Others look,
for the shedded skin
under leaves,
in the roots of trees,
or behind a fingernail moon.

Rush of Rain
Eleo C Nora Jun 23
For weeks it hadn't rained, and we were glad because the river was already overflowing onto the walkways.

Today the rain falls hard and steady, and there is something like fresh fear in the air but from my high balcony I cannot see the flood.

Each Morning
Eleo C Nora Jun 19
Pink stretches of fluffy light
would reach into my
small, sad, ivory house,
past shabbily
curtained windows.

Glowed behind the branches of
a maple tree we planted on my
son's first birthday.

Drifted through spring time buds,
into full green spread of summer leaves,
then golden umbrellas ready to fall
on the hard ground of winter.

I tied the curtains back so
the spectrum of seasons would
breathe into every cramped room.

There was only so much
I could do with that house.
Yet each dawn still
trembles it awake
with colour.

Lines from Blurs

Routines can grate you to shreds.
2. I was told to write before it is too late.
3. May is cold. It rains. There is nothing more.
4. If you can't accept all religions, then don't practice any.
5. Don't put ideas into my head.
They will escape and create chaos.
   Tame them on paper instead.
6. The dark days are here. Rain falls.
Water rises.  Even the pigeons are confused.

Sent to You

We sent a ticket.
Why do you still
stand on the tarmac?

We held your name on a sign.
We waited in the heat.

Near St. James
Eleo C Nora Aug 2016
While I sit on the blocks of a sculpture garden reading a package of grapefruit slices, some one so much younger takes a shot -- of me-- in my grey lace, cover, your grey silk, over, a beige skirt, gun metal sandals.

There are no statues in this sculpture garden. They were removed.
The marble fountain is dry, but a waiter sets tables in a cafe.

I melt into solitude

And you? Do you think no one is watching you, watching yourself?

In this room,
there are boxes
with open mouths
waiting for the garments
of my past.
Cast with stories,
cleaned from obligation
taken to a thrift shop
where someone will
choose them
-- not questioning
the tattered hems

Dive into being driven, charmed by the tidy
gaze of waves draped over the edge of the
open horizon
A summer blank is the step just
after the one taken before - which brings me
to a wide globe of wording
this 'hello'
