Teaching your child to read
Is one of the greatest gifts
You can offer them,
Along with love of course.

Instilling a love of reading
Opens their innocent eyes to
Exploration
Excitement
Adventures
Dreams and
Limitless
Possibilities

It enables them
To find a way
To articulate
To visualise
To create
their own magical world
Borne of imagination,
But no less real for the imagining of

Enabling them to create
A vision and a realisation
Of a whole new world
Borne of imagination
And ways of being
Of futures anew, and
Ones of their making
And choosing

Defences dissolving
Worries subsiding
Edges softening
Skin tingling
Heart warming,
As I melt in your arms feeling
Your warm embrace
Your tender touch
Your strength, power and care
Seeping into my bones
Instilling me with love
Restoring anew.

Oh the power of suggestion
The strength of our connection
As your hug reaches out and touches me
Across the snow filled miles

Conversation inhibited,
Yet also free of constraint,
Small talk a challenge,
In depth conversation my forte
And interrogation my ally
Bombarding others with quick fire questions,
‘You’re too deep’ it has been said more than once
As I reveal too much once again.

Misunderstanding social cues,
Eye contact a no no,
****** expressions a blur,
Tone of voice a trigger,
Hence emotions a minefield.

Literal listening,
Literal speaking,
Leading to sense of humour bypass,
Don’t waste your innuendos, irony and sarcasm on me,
Direct speaking is what wins the day.

Overwhelming sensory overload,
Confusion,
Misunderstanding,
Mishearing,
Tendency towards negativity,
Introversion,
A war of words
Inside my head
Pouring out my mouth,
Tearing me apart
And those whom I love.

Now working hard to change the script,
To be aware of the impact of deficiencies, defensiveness and quirkiness,
To remain level headed and mindful
As I alternate between tiptoeing and running roughshod
Through the labyrinth of life.
The implications of probably having Aspergers, and a world view shaped by a narcissistic father

The Moon
In your full regalia
Shining oh so bright,
Peering through the shimmering clouds
Reflecting off the calm smooth waters
With hopes, possibilities and dreams
For all those who dare
For all those who care

The passage of time
Weaves its entrails around my heart,
Capturing a moment long ago
Frozen in time,
Edges blurred and faded,
But the essence of emotions encapsulated forever,
Like a crying pearl upon my heart.

Standing in her hard fought power and glory
Like a Phoenix risen from the ashes
Ready to take on the world
To protect those in need
And to stand firm
Against the cowardly oppressors
Of the truth

Write a poem, he said,
It will do you good, he said.
I know not how, said I,
Where to start, what to say, what about, said I.

Think of something, someone, somewhen, he said,
Sit with pen and expectant paper,
Allow words to unveil themselves
From deep inside you.
So that I did, did I.

My first night
Experienced a storm in the woods, did I,
All magical and mystical.
Standing in the rain,
With a flash of lightening,
a crash high above.
Sensing tension in the air,
Feeling murmur in the earth,
Caught in the moment
Not scared was I.

Moved to tears of joy,
I was entranced,
enthralled.
enrapt’d.

I grabbed my expectant pen and paper
To capture the moment.
Words flowed from nowhere
Summing up
What I saw,
What I heard,
How I felt.
Something wondrous,
Something incredulous.
Something extraordinary.

I was finding my voice,
was I.
Lilibet Nov 2020
A tone of voice can be many things,
It can hurt
It can wound
It can make or break a relationship,
It can soothe
It can repair
It can show compassion and care,
It can be
Seductive
Alluring
Enticing
Inviting
Or it can be
Closed
Cutting
Spiteful
Hurtful.

Be aware of the power of tone
How it can lovingly embrace,
Or slice through bone.
Listen out for what is behind others’ words
As well as your own,
Be clear with your intention,
Be kind
Be compassionate
Be forgiving
To all
With all you say,
Including to yourself

There is an alternative way
To the barbed words
Catty comments
And sharp claws.
There is an alternative possibility
To the aggressive words
Constant fights
Hard lost battles
Born of fear,
And oh so tiring now.
I’m ready
To let my guard down
To reveal my vulnerability
To come home.

Put your claws away
Wipe your tears
Relax into the warm embrace
You are safe now
Your are home now
You are at peace now

Nearing the heights
Of the rollercoaster’s first climb,
With its challenges and uncomfortableness.
Now
Anticipation
Of that stomach in your mouth vertical drop moment of
Fear, exhilaration and excitement.
For you’re on the cusp of
The ride of your life
To remarkable extraordinary summits
Not yet imagined,
Only mere glimpses of,
Til now. . .

You’re already on
The ride of your life
The thrill of your life
With its screams, excitement and fear,
The ups and downs
And ins and outs.
This adventure,
Your adventure,
starts right now.
The time is right.
Perfect timing.
Divine timing
Lilibet Mar 2021
Oh the rollercoaster of life
With its ups and downs,
Thrills and spills,
Each day different from the last.
You think you’ve sussed it,
Contentedly cruising,
Enjoying the view,
Until the devil rears his ugly head
And with a crooked smile exclaims
“Enough of this sickening joy,
We need mischief and mayhem,
Carnage and chaos”
And without even a by your leave
Turns your world upside down once more

Struggling through life
With the weight of the world on his back
The snail keeps on moving forward
Slowly but surely
Leaving a contrail of slime behind
Yet with hope of greater things to come
Lilibet Sep 2021
Perpetually adrift,
Lost down a myriad of rabbit holes,
Like Rodin’s The Thinker at the Gates of Hell,
That’s exactly where the devil wants you,
Caught up in your tangled thoughts rather than living life in the here and now,
Overwhelming emotions,
Mental confusion,
Hysteria,
Feeling like there’s
No
Way
Out....

Stop!
Breathe!
Slow down your pitch,
Lower your tone of voice,
Hand your worries to God,
Ask Him to relieve you of your burden and light your way,
Consciously choose the path of joy and love
Over fear
Time after time after time...

The tragedy is in repeating
Those sins done unto you
Your parental sins
Your ancestral sins
Chained to your neck
Weighing you down
Blighting the lives of everything you touch.
But now
Your choice
Is whether to remain shackled
Bound to fear and repression
Or to break free
And step into
Your desires
Your potential
Your possibilities
Your love
Your divine glory

Who is the woman in the mirror?
This morning it was a fierce woman
Standing in her power
Ready and willing to take on the world
On her terms.
Not just a survivor
But a thriver
A Phoenix Risen from the ashes
In all her glory
Staring right back at you.
The past hurt, pain and abuse
That had kept her playing small,
Lying all around her
In tatters,
Like dust upon the floor,
No longer attached to her,
No power in them.
Only the fierceness
Of the woman
In the mirror

This was originally called Fierce

Swaying in the soft gentle breeze,
succulent green leaves glisten and glow,
catching the sun's golden rays, filtering
through the coppiced canopy above,
reflecting off droplets from heaven;
Bringing the verdant vibrant woods to life.

There's many a story these woods could tell,
If only trees could talk;
Long in the night they'd stand and share,
of the songbird’s sweet call for loves lost,
the snowy owl's nocturnal adventures,
the *****’s screams of ecstasy, or pain.

And let us not forget, the forest fairies fair,
coming out to play on such a glorious morn.
Sunbathing atop a toadstool fly agaric,
Admiring the glistening golden spider's web,
Downing the nectar from a rain soaked leaf.
Washing dainty toes in the morning dew.

But don’t expect to see one.
For they are as timid as the fawn,
yet as brave as the lion.
As delicate as lace,
yet as strong as silk.
But they are there, rest assured.
Keeping the magic of the woods alive,
protecting the spirits of the trees,
and allowing the secrets of the woods to live on,
For evermore
This is the second poem I’ve written. I wrote it the morning after the storm the night before, which inspired my first poem. I was inspired and lifted by the sun filtering through the trees and reflecting off the glistening vibrant green leaves

A wordsmith sits patently
Sharpening and refining his tools.
He listens and he waits
For the deadly moment,
Knowing exactly when to strike.
He unsheathes his sword,
Pointing expertly towards his prey.
Words of shining steel
Slice through the air
Landing with intent,
Cutting with precision,
Twisting with malice,
Into this bleeding heart
Of mine.
Lilibet Mar 2021
This is me,
I am strong,
I am powerful,
I am courageous,
I make no apology for who I am,
For who I am
Is forged from pain and suffering,
The lessons were hard,
The road was long,
But led to a stronger, better, more empowered version of me.
So if you’re struggling,
Feeling weak and abused,
Hold strong,
Be steadfast,
Raise your head up high,
Look for Him who supports and inspires you,
Know your suffering will be turned into strength
And an inspiration to others.
For some it takes a while to reach this place,
To slay the dragons
And stand in our power,
But once there,
With God on our side,
Lo betide anyone who dares to put us down again!
This was inspired by someone I met today in the way they held themselves, how they were strong and true to who they are, were unapologetic for that, and in their being was an inspiration to me

Those insidious beasts
Surreptitiously winding their tendrils
Through every orifice and vacuum,
Through every artery and vein,
Through every thought and word,
Till those two imposters
Guilt and shame
Are so embedded
One knows not where one begins
And the other ends
Lilibet Nov 2020
Today
I choose
A different way
To the well worn path of old,
Today
I choose
To let go
Of all that’s holding me back,
My limiting beliefs,
My damaging thoughts,
My hurtful words,
My self flagellation.
Today
I choose
To let go
Of all I thought was wrong with me,
Of how worthless I used to feel,
Of being downtrodden with no voice.
Today
I choose to
Rise above the ashes
Of past thoughts, negative feelings and broken dreams,
And step into who I truly am,
Who I choose to be,
Who I’m meant to be,
Knowing God is within me and all around me.
Today
I choose
To trust
All is well.
Today
Is a brand new day,
An opportunity
To start living my life,
Truly living,
With love, joy, kindness and compassion,
Patience, faithfulness and grace
Lilibet Nov 2020
Today I choose
Love
Trust
Joy
Gentleness

Actively choose what is good,
Shed what no longer serves you,
Surrender
Soften
Step into who you want to be
And trust all will be well
For you have more power than you realise
To create the life you want

An exceptional poet encapsulates the human condition from their own experience.
But the pain of realising how much you have hurt someone,
How worn out they are because of you,
Is almost too much to bear.
