Take a seat and listen as I tell you a tale /
Of what caused our society to wither and fail; /
What made the sea dry and the trees stop growing /
And was the one very reason that people quit showing /
Their love to each other, as it dulled their hearts. /
It's what made our civilization fall completely apart. //

It started with a promise to bring us together; /
To unite the earth so that we could weather /
Whatever Mother Nature and Satan could toss our way. /
But instead caused the rope of human connection to fray. //

With all online, for all to see, /
It sparked greed, desire, and jealousy. /
Without a moderator to halt its destruction, /
We blazed down the path with a one-way junction. //

The ferocious monster’s tweet was innocently disguised, /
Diverting our thoughts from the blackening skies. /
We sat in silence as we bonded with others. /
We mourned for all, and none to see, for the deaths of our mothers. //

The seas were filled with a chronic virus, /
As we woke up from sleep to check on all that we’d missed. /
We gawked at the items we could not afford, /
While mass starvation was fully ignored. //

Our infinite power produced a sickening waste, /
But our all-knowing boxes insisted we were safe. /
So we turned out the lights, resting peaceful and deep, /
As a storm of pure energy consumed us all in our sleep. //

You’ve heard it from me; /
This is your warning. /
Appreciate the nights /
While you still have each morning. /
Open your hearts and rest your eyes /
From the illuminated words that ensured Humanity’s demise. ///
Not sure if the line formatting will be as intended, as a few of my lines are fairly long. I'm leaving the back-slashes, in case of this.
