the demographics were too cool
all of us in the market cafe
ten tables of substantial black women
with multiple bingo cards
and us, a couple of pale-faced hippies
with free wings and supermarket beers
at one point on the way to the can
i said to the guard "watch out
this crowd’s about to erupt"
he smirked
but then five minutes later it erupted
they ran out of bingo cards
and the ladies were outraged, shrieking
"what is the big deal?" i asked a woman at the next table
"you keep eating your wings and drinking your beer"
she said, shutting me down
to which i answered "will do"

i was on a staycation
i told my son i felt like blackjack
he said ”i’ll give you some tips”
i told him i know how to play blackjack
“no you don’t,” he said
correctly, as it turned out
he took me to the casino
for a blackjack lesson
i won a day’s salary
before i finished my yuengling
we got the good cigars
i raised that kid wrong

how's life?
not too shabby. currently doing a 12 hour shift in an ICU.
our band is playing our Conflict Resolution show on
saturday night, we're having a meeting of the Why Group--
our abstract discussion salon-- on sunday afternoon,
then on monday i'm doing a photo shoot with a model
therapist friend in a hotel bar. we're all dressing in scrubs;
they're trying to entice the after-work medical crowd.
getting paid with two free drinks and an appetizer.
wow. photo shoot for what?

as i reflect on my covid patients who died
the ones who skipped the vaccines
i remember all the OD deaths
people who hung themselves
i had two guys this week
who shot themselves in the head
their organs put to good use in other bodies
people have their "reasons" for what they do
i'm a to-each-his-own kind of guy
it's a free country
do with it what you will
