when the final breath is given the sea will gently hold it when the last heartbeat has sounded the silence will carefully keep it when the ember of the body dissolves the mountains will sigh and remember

when
the cloaks and folds of clouds passed across the full face of the moon and mottled the forests and fields with shadows with their flamed coats and curiosity what did the foxes think? deeper in the darkness did the restless bears take notice? and what of the silent deer? did they pause in their wanderings and look up?

the cloaks
they shuffled above me agitated by my moving of logs and sticks calling out in long notes of displeasure they finally grew so troubled that one dropped a stone from its black beak and hit me right in the middle of my back what is your current place in life? are you challenged? provoked? inspired? when was the last time that you were the moon that shines through the silent forest?

last night the first hard rain of spring fell this morning the rivers roiled with rain swell churned with snow melt and mud in the distance there is still snow in the high mountains there is still an edge of winter do you doubt this world? question your place in the unfolding of things? such moments are allowed even encouraged however do not forget to trust the yellow hints of possibility pushing through the matted leaves remember your ocean voice and the notes that will collect you

as an offering he poured sake onto the trunks of the two trees in the perfect blue sky two black-eared kites circled above us at first they came in quite closely but then they climbed away higher and higher it took all day to cut down the trees one was already dead and pockmarked by woodpeckers both were perched over the incline of our small backyard and both should a heavy wind be willing were well within reach of the house that rests just below ours twice the kites returned once calling out it is early spring and i wondered what they thought of us with our industry of ropes and ladders and chainsaws invite the moon to fill your house invite warmth to touch your face invite mystery to topple everything

the young deer made its way through the shadows and the deep snow it moved slowly and deliberately picking its way across the steep incline of the mountain with night descending it had not progressed very far it did not call out or quicken its pace it seemed content that this was where it would settle and wait out the night to remain in the silence until morning edged open first br eat h first b eat final b eat final br eat h

whilst toiling uphill sisyphus took a spill and with a mighty groan he let go of his stone he watched it roll down through the very center of town yet despite all the trouble and the piles of rubble the very worst part was when he had to start all over again

whilst toiling uphill
let the new snow rest in the trees let the new light peel over the mountains step away from what is slow and tangled from what is withered and familiar home is a feral moon stretching long shadows home is a constellation of tiny things brilliant and vulnerable home is reason enough to linger in this life just a little bit longer

each winter
the peanuts were placed in the crooks of the tree the nuts were there for the squirrel quicksilver and leaping through the wintery trees in our backyard the next morning the peanuts were gone and the snow was marked with the tracks of crows i looked up and saw a crow sitting there tilting its head and keeping a keen black eye on my movements and where i was placing the remaining peanuts later that morning the peanuts and the crow were gone there in the dark corner a new pavilion of light soft through the shadows embering higher and brighter into the day speak and find out what you want to say
