It's hard to imagine You were ever like that Trusting hand holding mine Stealing upward glances Seeking guidance as we negotiated a crowd Back pack almost your size Bobbing optimistically and up for the adventure I'm sure if I think back Rewind Past the outbursts and accusations Further now Past the tantrums and machinations Back some more Past the therapy and medications You are there, small and ready to bloom

It came tumbling My heart And you caught it Didn't know it could Find a home In comfortable silence (most of the time) And reverent observance of southwestern mountain ranges crimson with the sun's waining blood Your hand was elegant and kind as it reached out for mine The most guileless beckoning  to succumb To our spiritual commingling and the beginning of us

13 years since you entered the world A little golden raisin The doctor exclaiming how well developed you were It was clear from the first belting scream You'd be a force to be reckoned with (May this carry you through) And so happy was your belly giggle and sweet singing to yourself in your crib Long sessions of puddle stomping and painting with food There was no holding you back the first day of school (parting the sea of sobbing toddlers clinging to their parents) Shouting gleefully, Let me go to school! Once there, you were not at on board with sharing the number one spot in line or sitting still for circle time. And now you spin lines and color Drawing is your meditation And forging into a new world the strange hinterland before adulthood Craving freedom without responsibility (who doesn't?) And we stand proud and nervous honing that same instinct that had our arms outstretched, at the ready when you randomly jumped off the jungle jim...your little body 6 feet from the ground.
