48/M/the foot of the mountain i've been fixed and i've been broken and i've broken what i've fixed
i am a december tree that will not release autumn-claimed leaves in my fear of endings lies a refusal of beginnings holding on to yesterday leaves no room for tomorrow

rootbound
i have created a shadow in the shape of your presence for i feel the horizon calling you so i have made myself a keepsake formed of our blue-soul clay that i will curl into my pulse when your swirling currents pull your tides into the distance and expose our cracked-heart canyons but know my mountain roots run deep and i will be here when you return my rivers pulsing their glacial blood your name forever intoned by the beating of my volcanic heart

keepsake
this is a season of tired and broken things mushrooms emerge from the dark earth jaundiced leaves refusing release blackened leaf pumpkin vines scattered families of geese honk lost gosling names morning mist runs the river it is a season of cold and swirling winds eroding sandstone’s epoch hourglass sand shifts into the sagebrush steppe a lone thunderstorm wanders as the last wildflower fades as a golden sunset into twilight i will be here until i’m not it is enough to watch the light change horizons rimmed with golden blue and to feel the weight of years like blowing sand upon my cheeks as stone yields to wind beginning life as soil the sun leaves and returns again

autumnal
autumn conceals a stillness written in glimmering stardust across the shadow of the moon scribed in the language of harvest recited by every frost-blue breeze hidden in the hollow spaces between hushed leaf-drop whispers — ripened silences of sweet nothings passed between autumn’s lips and the waiting forest floor

interlude
a rare defiance is carved into the marrow of her bones weathered by the beating years yet unbroken as stone ancient melodies tangled in her evergreen hair whisper of long-forgotten skies and storms she learned to bear though seasons try to claim her with decay and brittle breath roots of mountain blood run deep unyielding even to death

her strength
life-blooded water tumbles polishing boulders with aeons buoyant with rich mountain air swimming with mother’s finest soil all drawn from the summit’s height by the gravity of a patient ocean as it travels its time-worn path – the river sings and it dances carving canyons into being shaping the very face of the last wilderness with its undying love for home

winter's river
as the cold december moon descends into her mountain tomb and dies another morning death her light enshrined within my breath i will remember her within this fragile moment and her glorious midnight shine for she exists as borrowed light just as my life is borrowed time

borrowed
the omnipotence of distance between two beating hearts caged by ribs of inhibition silences his hope but the sun rises in beech forests giving his warm heart space to beat freely with the morning and soothes his silent ache

the space between
like the shining daybreak moon calls from the depths beyond her light beckons him urging him to sing his truest song so he ascends rising to greet her and bows before her angelic feet his melody now complete and together they commence the dance of ages

her call
brooding oceans stir awaken with the wind — as the azure of her vastness moves from dendritic depths her river tendrils reach, embrace and unite with his mountaintops calling him from windblown caves she shrouds him in shining snows a blanket of her love — and as she speaks his quiet name with grace and peaceful tones life floods his empty lungs and bathing him with mountain rain she pulls him from the in-between her salted tears, a lifeforce that warms his hardened veins — opening his eyes anew with the pureness of her name
