why is it that you must follow me everywhere, (fill in a male name here)?

why must unmet possibilities always materialize before my eyes as living-versions of ourselves?

I am waiting for a flight at a foreign airport and see us, in our old age, purchasing fruit and beer by Gate 33

heading to a location where we’ll meet our grandchildren --so I hear you say

my older self takes a sip from that cold beer, kisses you on the cheek and rubs your ulcer-bearing belly

As you walk on voluntarily indifferent, proud
