Leather and oak
Whiskey and smoke
Exhaled in a languid defense
Of an evening that’s spent
In a mist of ferment
That eventually lifts all pretense
Quietly tight
As you sip through a night
Of forgetting the reason you came
Asking, no doubt
What your life is about
And then looking for someone to blame
Feeling at ease
‘Til the moment you seize
On a thought that you thought you had lost
Wondering why
You believed in the lie
And then categorizing the cost
Leaving a tip
Like a bargaining chip
To the sad patron saint of the waiting
Hoping to gain
Some relief from the pain
In the arms of sweet equivocating
On your way home
You’re no longer alone
As you walk about talk about trust
Like a moth to the flame
You dissolve in the shame
Of the heat and the light of your lust
In the morning once more
You have evened the score
And your ego’s exacted its price
So you say your goodbye
And you try not to cry
For the loneliest act of your life

… of defeat!
Reflections of what might have been
Dissolving in a rippling grin
Engorged … with round … endeavors
÷ Unknowing ÷
÷ Uncaring ÷
Drawing to your sodden depths
The unripe fruit of duffer’s quest
With naught to mark this ovoid feast
But gentle … jesting … lapping
≠ Wet Nemesis ≠
I curse the void that clings to all that fail to mark your distant shore
And in distain, show no remorse
But Quick!
Return to mocking calm
To lurk beside the verdant way
Until the next unfortunate
Attends your … greedy call

Draw strength, draw strength from those who died
Make peace with those who lived
For in our memories all survive
Their deeds, their times outlive
For peace they went, for peace they fought
Though some would not return
Yet with courageous deeds they taught
That freedom must be earned
Now we in peace and freedom dwell
This heaven they bequeath
To those who challenged death and fell
We dedicate our wreath
And though with passing years it seems
Their legacy might fail
Yet in our blood, and in our dreams
Their souls are marching still

The fog lies off the shore
About a mile or two
I count the pebbles here
It’s all that I can do
I walk along the beach
The water calls to me
Somewhere beyond my reach
Upon the beckoning sea
I long to journey on
To where the seagulls fly
Far out beyond the fog
Where water meets the sky
Fresh waves lap at my feet
The doubt in me persists
My life is incomplete
My breath adds to the mist
I turn to face once more
The warm seductive sea
I linger on the shore
My heart, my heart flies free

A child is like a memory that promises to be
An intriguing little echo of our brief mortality
A fuzzy new reflection of what has been before
That captures all the essence of our lives, yet … so much more
For each will add a suffix to the mantle of descent
A familiar revelation of a personal ascent
‘Til soon they too encounter their own human frailty
And aspire to hold their mirror that reflects eternity

I die … without a fight … yet not conceding
But gently, as the world around me ages
Rescinding gift of health, each sense receding
As life escapes me, in retreating stages
Perhaps beyond this chapter lies conclusion
Or if another chapter, maybe better
Yet maybe, this is but a Grand Illusion
If so, I’m glad we were deceived together
When I am gone I hope you will remember
That life became us and our time on earth
I know that I will keep one thought forever
That you … became the measure ... of my worth

There’s some that have a story
While some bring but a tale
Some come in search of glory
Some come escaping hell
All those who come are wanting
Yet none will be denied
And though His path seems daunting
The journey starts … inside
You enter in His household
By opening your heart
Let Jesus cross that threshold
And your salvation starts
So be at peace my brother
And do not fear the end
For soon you will discover
An everlasting friend

Distant, distant cold
A friendless winter sky
A lonely Arctic sigh
Light and airy soul
A whisper on a wind
You wish would never end
Crisp and brittle bold
A voice at eventide
Affairs of fragile pride
Mystery untold
The depths of oceans deep
The shape of moonless sleep
Heartsick and taboo
Royally and true
Eyes that draw you through
This
is blue
