I sat out in the cold tonight
beneath the dark and blackened sky
and saw a shape in the dim light;
a shadow whose eyes softened nigh.
He held a book before him out
and asked, “would you please sign this?”
I obliged, but soon I did doubt
of my name then writ upon that list.
“Why should I sign this form at all?
What does it give or grant to me?”
No word came back, as I recall,
and then I bade him now to flee.
So he went back into that dark rift
and left me there to think it through.
If my name was writ upon that list,
I wonder what it would now do.

It was not my place to stay,
And so I left without goodbye,
Knowing one thing now for sure;
The truth of that 'look' in her eye.

We did not care for much at all;
At night we danced in laughing droves,
And set aside the day's brief light.
Yet, all in all, we did not care.
For we did know with great delight,
That day would pass and bring the night.

When matters rise in sudden haste,
We must not let our pathway veer;
We’ll bear the sour, offending taste,
Of ***** judged above plain beer.

What answer can I hope to receive?
Be swift as may be, and be just.
If naught, then grant a fair reprieve;
A death dealt clean in one ******

How summer haze had veiled my days;
The muted drab of orange leaves
Made way for winter's lack of praise,
And left my quiet life to cease.
