To yearn is to suffer
A burden of desperate comfort
The gasps of air your lungs cling to when
trying
not
to
drown

Ash-laden smoke rising
Fading embers sparkling amongst the wisps
Whispering memories burrowing into your chest
Cold wind whipping across your cheeks
Nose biting like an icicle
Staring into the dark trees topped by smoky skies
Grey is the feeling and the inherent knowing
It is sadness swaying to the tune of apathy
Which will I choose to carry?
The anguish of oppressive grief
Or the festering rot of ennui
If I try escaping
I only end up running in circles
An ouroboros of ravaging hunger
I chew off my own tail to keep from starving

Sure they all say
Putting yourself together again is possible
But everyone fails to mention
That jagged edges will never fit the same
Glueing together sharp sides
May keep it all together for now
But
Only one drop away
From returning to a fractured state
