A blackened river’s water beneath the moonlight
Shimmering sparkles
Atop ripples of despair
Bring to light glowing cheeks
Against a smile so big, so bright
Only he knows those blushing tones
Beneath the lavender rays

Brittle bones ache
Against plush fabric
Tossing, turning, yearning
All hours of the night
A moan, a groan, a snore
Talking into still air
Pupils flurry back and forth
Searching for imagery never to be seen
Beyond the confines of eyelids
Brittle bones always ache
Against that cloudy mattress

A leaf flitters away in the wind
The peak of fall, hues of orange, red, yellow
Flowing with fury into the corners of a country home’s porch
Taking up space until brown decay soaks through
Burning a dark shadow of its shape into the pavement
Branding the earth, back into the soil
When the winter kicks up the remains
I can still feel its warmth
Red, orange, yellow
At the peak of Fall

A jigsaw left unsolved
Left in hiding out of frustration
Years in hiding
Only to find the last puzzle piece
Was sitting in front of me the whole time
