love

by Nigel Bouvart

is like a drum
deep, resonant
we walk across its skin
and it amplifies our footsteps
sending its vibrations through our bones
lending our handiwork back to us
we dance:our steps create its beat, and vice versa
danger awaits in it
for those who mince about
whose movements are delicate, almost fearful
and for the clumsy
who blunder about half-blindly
for them, love has in store unfamiliar rhythms,
and resounding crashes at the oddest intervals
